ATLANTA – On July 8, 2019, ten construction students from the Inner-City Muslim Action Network (IMAN) Atlanta Green Re-Entry Program added the Green Professional Building Skills Training (GPRO) Fundamentals of Green Building credential to their qualifications. GPRO is a national green building training and certificate program linking tenets of sustainability with trade-specific construction knowledge for those who build, renovate and maintain buildings.
Training for IMAN students was held in their construction trailer on an IMAN construction site
and hosted by 2M Design Consultants, Inc to bring GPRO training to Atlanta’s green re-entry candidates who want to join the sustainable construction industry and work on high-performance
construction projects. Following their July 25, 2019 graduation from the IMAN program each of the ten GPRO credentialed cohort accepted a full-time post in the Atlanta commercial construction industry.
GPRO candidates must pass a comprehensive 50 question exam to earn certification and use the GPRO designation. Those earning GPRO Fundamentals of Building Green certification qualify to work on green construction projects in Atlanta like Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, and The Fulton County Public Library System’s Phase II Capital Improvement Program.
Projects under the LEED Rating System have an opportunity to attempt an Innovation in Design Credit using GPRO under LEED Pilot Credit #81 to train and certify trade workers to build and renovate their projects. GPRO training and certification for low wealth residents afford opportunities for on-the-job-training and placement with contractors and skilled trade workers during the construction phase, who are also GPRO certified. GPRO certification communicates the inclusion of certified trade workers who can actually implement, in the field, best practices in constructing high-performance green buildings.
IMAN program participants that achieved certification in GPRO – Fundamentals:
